Operational Research

Our Operational Research (OR) team use mathematical modelling and analytical techniques to find solutions to our clients’ business problems. We are often called to provide our expert skills in areas such as economic modelling and business case development, risk modelling, optimisation, simulation, systems dynamics or forecasting.

OR consultants sometimes work on their own, but more often as part of a teams of consultants from other Capgemini Consulting disciplines where, because of our modelling expertise, we are seen as highly valuable and sought after members of the team. Projects tend to be short and sharp, lasting on average between six and ten weeks. As such, you’ll gain insight into lots of different kinds of problems and a wide range of private and public sector clients.  As a result of this you will have a challenging but very rewarding time as part of the OR team.

OR are currently looking for a small number of graduates to join their team in September.  If interested, please click here to find out more.

We have grouped our solutions into four services, which are briefly described as follows:

  • Value Management - Improving investment decisions, maximising the delivery of benefits and increasing the understanding of the drivers of business performance.
  • Advanced Business Analytics - Optimising the operational effectiveness and efficiency of business operations, processes and workforce.
  • Business Strategy Modelling and Analysis - Informing strategic decision making by helping organisations to understand and quantify the impact of alternative business options, economic assumptions and industry scenarios.
  • Risk Analysis and Mitigation - Understanding and quantifying risk exposure and developing effective strategies for minimising the impact on the business.

In OR, we effectively apply an analytical approach to consulting, so our roles call for a combination of analytical and consulting skills, which is what makes us unique. As well as developing new and innovative ways of delivering value, you’ll become expert at building relationships with clients and presenting complex issues in an easily understandable way.

To give you an idea of the wide range of interesting problems we have solved for our clients, here are some examples:

  • We helped a healthcare organisation decide where to locate patient services between hospital sites by simulating a number of scenarios using real patient data.
  • We helped a transport authority decide the optimum spend on new technology at a passenger terminal by simulating the impact on queues using travel data.
  • We helped an overseas energy provider to decide the mix of energy products to offer in a new deregulated market by modelling the profitability of different customer segments.
  • We helped a major shoe retailer to maximise profit by using a statistical package analysing their data so they could gain insight into the products & stores to focus their efforts on.

What you will need

  • ABB at A level or equivalent (excluding General Studies)
  • Minimum 2:1 degree or equivalent and, ideally an MSc or post-graduate qualification in Operational Research or Management Science
  • Experience in one of the following areas: economic modelling and business case development, risk modelling, optimisation, simulation, systems dynamics or forecasting
